Mountain lions, or cougars, have been spotted in Illinois, entering the state from Wisconsin and Missouri. These sightings have been few and far between, though, and most have been without foundation. The TV spot below and THIS recent article may get you thinking. What a story! A magnificent animal just trying to survive. This is why I carry Cat Chow and a rubber mouse. Nice kitty.
Good question. Maybe he posed an immediate threat or attacked someone's dog ("Quick, we have to destroy him"). He could have been tranquilized and moved somewhere, no doubt, but someone made the decision to end the life of this magnificent traveler. It's a shame.
Aficionado of the American buffalo and proud member of the Buffalo Warriors, a herd of beer-swilling trail runners and some of the finest humans and criminals on the planet.
"If you were looking for the definitive symbol of the conflict between the cultures that had existed in the American West for at least ten thousand years, and maybe longer, and the culture that was just a building East of the Mississippi River, this culture of technology, of commerce, of grasping after tomorrow before it arrives, you couldn't come up with two more powerful symbols than the Railroad, and the Buffalo, because when the Railroad met the Buffalo, the Iron Age met the Stone Age, the machine arrived in the garden, and the West was changed for ever." - T.H. Sad story. Why couldn't they tranquilize the cougar and transfer him to a back country somewhere?
